Cádiz: Exploring Your Vision
This workshop is about street photography, using the camera to explore the city of Cadiz in a direct, spontaneous way. The spontaneous act of photographing and editing are the two basic components. The workshop will emphasize the development of a unique, personal way of seeing and also how to edit, select and sequence your photographs.
Alex and Rebecca are a creative team who often edit projects and books together. On the first day of the workshop they will give each student a critique of past work. By that first afternoon, students will be out working on their first assignment, which they will choose themselves. It may be a specific street, plaza, neighborhood, subculture, profession, family or individual; something that they are passionate enough about to return to every day. For the rest of the week, the group will meet in the mornings and critique each student's ongoing work. Over the five days of photographing and editing each participant will build a coherent set of images that will begin to represent his or her photographic stance or attitude toward the city of Cadiz.
Besides photographing and editing each day, this workshop will explore a series of topics, including the process of photographing spontaneously and intuitively; how to photograph in cultures other than one's own; the relationship between images (such as the sequencing and juxtaposition of photographs); the practical realities of the magazine and art worlds; the emotional and psychological implications of working in color vs. black and white; the difference between images in a book and images on the wall; and how long-term projects can evolve into books and exhibitions.
And please bring lots of questions to the workshop. The ultimate direction of the workshop will be influenced by the kinds of questions that you pose.
WHAT TO BRING / MATERIALS. Alex and Rebecca ask that all participants bring a portfolio of 20 - 30 prints to the first day of class of work that they feel best represents who they are as photographers. It does not have to be professional work, a set of images done to satisfy an editor, rather it should be a representation of the photographers personal vision, passions or obsessions. They must be prints NOT digital files (They do not have to be fine prints, they can be cheap 10 x 15 cm machine prints or inkjet prints) There is no longer any film processing in Cadiz therefore this workshop will be DIGITAL ONLY. Please bring your own digital support to Cádiz: laptop computer with the correct programs (Photoshop + editing program). Since all of you will be working digitally, it's essential that you bring a memory stick or be prepared to put each day's work onto a CD so that it can be downloaded into a single computer attached to a digital projector for viewing at the beginning of each class.
