Ways of Seeing

Five points for this photography workshop

1. Photography as a way to develop one's knowledge and as a way of life.

2. The intersection between documentary work and having a subjective point of view.

3. Looking twice, thoroughly, not only at the world but also at our images about the world.

4. The difference between the image and digital.   Is it just a technical question?   Are both considered "photography"?

5. The importance of having a certain visual rigor.

The workshop will be both theoretical and practical in nature and only color photography will be used. Navia will share his own work and the work of other photographers with the group encouraging them to analyze both the editorial process and also the conception and development of personal projects. Participants will be asked to develop a photo story choosing from the many story ideas available in Cadiz and will be encouraged to develop a visual coherence that allows for effective story telling and not just concentrate on making "beautiful" images.

IMPORTANT: Navia asks that people bring a portfolio of their photographs to the workshop. He also asks that people bring one photography book or published photo essay that interests them and has somehow made a mark on them. During the course of the five days, these books/photo essays will form part of a small "library" that can be shared with the group.
