STREET SMARTS

BRUCE GILDEN brings to the workshop his unique style of street photography which has truly become his own over the past 25 years of working in New York City and other urban areas, both in the US and abroad. He will work with the students to teach them how to improve their pictures shot in the streets by best identifying their working "style" for street photography, and aiding them in gaining "street smart" sensibilities necessary to working in any environment, that ability to be in the middle of the scenario, but be unobtrusive.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT :  Shoot 4 rolls of film or equivelant in digital (144 frames) Before the workshop each participant should shoot 2 rolls of film (72 frames) in a familiar area, a place where you are "comfortable" working, and another 2 rolls of film (72 frames) in a different or "new" situation. The results of this assignment should be brought to the fisrt day of the workshop as either prints or digital files.

In addition to the assignment to be shot in advance of the workshop, bring a portfolio of your best photos (no more than 30) to the first session. They should be the ones that are indicative of your style. They do NOT have to be "street" photographs.

During the workshop Gilden will present and talk about his own work. He will review students' portfolios, followed by reviewing their recently-completed assignment and film shot during workshop. Students will be out daily photographing. Gilden will spend several sessions with the students working in the street. This will include technical discussions/demonstrations of working with electronic flash in combination with available light.

We will have a public projection of the work made during the four days on the last evening of the workshop.
