Documentary Practice: Towards a Union of Style and Meaning

Photojournalism, at its best, manages to combine a deep respect for the facts of the "outside world"  - the dynamics of the subject matter which unfold independently of the presence of the photographer - with the personal style of the doumentarian.   It is an intriguing fact of photojournalistic history that the most stylized photographers are often also the most rigorous of journalists.   Indeed,  at this moment,  photojournalism worldwide is embracing more experimental, personal approaches than ever before,  making this an exciting moment in the profession.

During this week-long workshop, we will explore the (seeming) paradox between the reporter's commitment to respect and record facts,  and the simultaneus importance of showing a marked visual style and personal point of view.    Students will be pushed to develop their personal vision -  to purify their particular, individual "take" on the subject matter at hand - while respecting the rigorous journalistic demands of documentary work.

The workshop is based on an intensive series of short assignments to be edited and discussed by the group.   We will alternate these with sessions of detailed analysis of images ad reportages by documentary masters known for an evolved personal style.  We will also engage practical considerations as to how to maintain personal integrity and vision in the mass magazines, newspaper and web markets, based on my own experiences in the profession.  In addition,  i will take time to review each photographers own work,  and offer constructive criticism on ongoing or proposed projects.

Students should come with their own portfolios or ongoing projects (preferably in print format). Paticipants should be prepared to work intensively, and to engage with the group in a spirit of solidarity and mutual support.

Please refer beforehand to my website www.stephenferry.com  and to I Am Rich Potosi: The Mountain that Eats Men  (Stephen Ferry,  Moncacelli Press,  1999).  I look forward to seeing you in Cadiz.
